Chapter 5.4

Georgi was peering into a big pot when they walked up.
“Hope you like Surprise Soup,” she said.
“What’s the surprise?” ask Neil.
Georgi handed Neil a bowl.
“It isn’t soup,” said Alex with a giggle.
Neil looked into the bowl at the spaghetti and smiled.
“Got you!” Alex giggled.
After they filled their bowls, they sat down in the shade of the treehouse Georgi turned to Neil and asked, "So how and where did you find my husband?”
“I found him trying to break into a pawn shop,” Neil began the story of the night before. “The noise was kicking up local interest. I didn’t try to approach him until he finished emptying his gun on-”
“On target practice.” Georgi interrupted, jerking her head toward Alex.
“Right,” Neil said, as he glanced at the girl. “target practice... Anyway, he was out of ammo and he’d missed two targets. I couldn’t let the guy...uh...lose at target practice, so I ran in for an assist.”
Georgi closed her eyes and let out a breath. “Thank you.”
“No worries,” Neil smiled. “He was a little miffed I’d cut in. He stomped around like a toddler. It would have been funny if he weren’t so loud. I ended up promising to help him get in the pawn shop if he quieted down.”
“Did that work?” Rosemarie asked.
“Nah,” Neil answered. “He wasn’t in any shape to be quiet. I got him back to the car and spent the rest of the time trying to keep him from passing out before he could lead us back here.”
“Did you get into the pawn shop?” asked Georgi.
“No,” said Neil. “I had to make another promise to go back later.”
There was a loud thud in the cabin. They looked over just as Randy burst out of the door. He looked a little confused as he stumbled out into the light. Once he caught sight of Neil, he stared hard at him. He seemed to come to some conclusion, grunting as he wobbled toward the group.
“Any food left?” he mumbled.
“Yes. Do you need me to get it for you?” asked Georgi as she jumped up to get him a bowl.
“No, I can get it.” He snatched the bowl and helped himself. He then began to shovel spaghetti into his face as he made his way to stand near everyone else.
“You," he pointed at Rosemarie, "owe me an apology. I was right. Zombies everywhere out there.”
"I owe you a what?" she screeched.
“Stop!” Georgi said sharply. She turned to Alex. “Put on your headphones.”
“Yes, ma’am,” she said. Reluctantly pulling out her ipod and slipping on her headphones.
She turned back to the fighting pair. "No arguing. I want to hear what happened."
Rosemarie bit her tongue and turned away.
“There's tons of them out there,” he continued. “I killed a bunch of 'em before I ran out of ammo.”
Rosemarie gave him a go to hell look over her shoulder. “After you got tanked up and stole my car?"
"That shit ain't important! Killing these damn things are!" He shot a look back.
"Oh what the fuc-"
"Rosemarie!" Georgi snapped.
"What?" Rosemarie snapped back.
"Now is not the time," she said, glancing at Alex.
Rosemarie crossed her arms and turned away again. It's never the fucking time, she thought.
"Like I was saying," Randy said loudly. "I ran out of ammo killing as many as I could." He paused to scoop another mouthful and continued on as he chewed. "I need to go back into town. We need more supplies and I need more ammo. We've got to get ready before the hordes get this far.”
“Hordes,” Rosemarie mumbled. "You just want more target practice."
"Listen, you-" Randy began.
“We could still go to Uncle Levi’s," Georgi interrupted.
"We need weapons. Not unlimited stacks of newspapers," Randy said gruffly.
Georgi flushed. "He's been a hunter his whole life."
"So he's got a gun? What kind?" he asked.
"A few shotguns," she answered. "And he has a lot of things for buildin'. We could beef things up here."
"Good. It won't be a useless trip." Randy walked back to the pot and scooped up some more spaghetti. "We'll go tomorrow."
Rosemarie could have spit fire, she was so pissed. She got up and climbed the steps to the treehouse. She wasn't going to be around this idiot anymore than she had to be.
