Neil led Georgi to a run down old barn. It once was a two story building with a staircase leading up the side of it. The wood had turned a shade of dark grey from weathering. An old wooden wagon sat decaying outside the barn. It was sad and beautiful at the same time.
“I see why no one told us about this,” Georgi said. “My brother and I would’ve been climbin’ all through this thing.”
The interior of the barn looked pretty dark and dirty. Georgi was willing to bet there were lots of spiders and snakes in there.
“Yes, but be careful. We don’t want any snake bites.”
Neil helped her pry a few boards off the side. It hurt as the wood bit into her hand.
“Next time, we should bring gloves,” she said. She pulled a few splinters out of the palm of her hand. She stopped to listen for any footsteps from the forest. Hearing nothing out of the ordinary, she turned her attention back to the small stack of boards.
“Let’s try to carry them all at once. I don’t really want to come back for a bit. We made a lot of noise doin’ that,” she said.
“Sure,” said Neil.
They heaved the wood up on and stumbled their way back to the cabin. Carrying the boards through the woods was an undertaking. They had to navigate through the thick underbrush. Georgi was relieved when they reached the yard. Especially since she saw that they hadn’t attracted any zombies. At least not yet.
“Let’s put them down right here...Woo, that takes some doin’,” she said as she put the boards down.
Georgi went into the cabin. A few seconds later, she came out carrying Alex’s backpack and a handsaw. If they were going to get anything done, they would need the bridge first. She looked up at the window high up on the cabin.
“Neil, we need to open up the window,” Georgi said pointing at the cabin. “Then a platform for the bridge. Can you help me do that?”
He looked over the cabin and seemed to be calculating. “Yes, we can get this thing knocked out,” he replied.
“Rosemarie, can you and Alex keep a look out? We are going to be making a lot of noise, “ she said.
A look of fear came over Rosemarie for a moment. “Yes,” she said. “I hope it doesn’t take long.” She and Alex stood at the railing of the treehouse and looked around the yard.
Neil and Georgi went into the cabin. They had to move a bunch of dust and cobweb covered junk out of the loft. They didn’t bother to examine it very closely. They could do that later.
“This window is big enough for us to crawl through,” said Neil. “We could put a door here later if you want.”
“That would be great,” Georgi said as they forced the window open. They heard a yelp from the treehouse.
Neil poked his head out. “Everything ok over there?”
“Yeah,” said Rosemarie. “So far so good.”
“What was the little yelling a second ago?” Georgi asked.
Alex giggled, “A squirrel.”
“A little jumpy,” said Rosemarie. “Sorry.”
“No problem, “ said Neil.
He pulled his head in the window. Georgi inspected the side of the cabin below the window. “I think we can attach a platform right here,” she said.
“Looks good to me,” said Neil.
Leaving the cabin, Georgi was a little worried about the noise they were going to make while pounding nails into the wood. There isn’t much we can do about it, she thought.
