Randy finally pulled onto a road with a lot of businesses on it. He spotted a drug store. After maneuvering around abandoned cars and piles of debris, he made it into the parking lot. The front door and windows of the building were smashed.
“Uh, I doubt there’s much in there,” said Neil, hesitantly.
“We came all this way,” said Rosemarie, her voice sounding much more determined than she felt. “We’re going to check.”
They sat in the car for a few moments looking around their surroundings.
“Better get this over with. Here,” said Randy, handing Rosemarie a gun. “I hope you know how to use it.”
“Sure, point the dangerous end towards the thing you want to shoot, then pull the trigger,” she said.
Neil chuckled. “More or less.”
“Good. 98% of the time no one’s coming to save you. You have to save yourself,” growled Randy. “Just don’t shoot me.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it,” lied Rosemarie.
Randy grunted. He pushed the car door open and cautiously stepped out. He stood listening for a moment.
“I don’t hear anything. Let’s get moving,” he barked.
Neil and Rosemarie climbed out of the car and followed Randy into the store. Stepping over broken glass, they walked through the doors. The front of the building was well lit by the sunlight pouring in through the windows, but the back of the store was dark. The part of the store with the pharmacy, of course, thought Rosemarie, rescuing a flashlight from the depths of her backpack.
Randy walked across the whole front of the store, checking down the aisles as far as he could see. He pulled out a flashlight. Holding it next to his gun, Randy pointed both towards the darkness. He quickly checked any dark hiding place as they made their way back to the pharmacy. Nothing jumped out on them.
“Well, shit,” said Rosemarie, looking at the ransacked shelves.
Rosemarie shined her light across the floor. Pills and bottles were scattered every where. Syrups ran like blood and made their shoes stick to the floor. She bent to pick up a pill bottle that had rolled under a cabinet. The text on it read, “Thiamin.”
“I don’t feel good about this,” said Rosemarie.
“About what?” asked Neil.
“I hate taking things without paying,” she said.
“Look around,” said Randy, gruffly. “This is survival. If the world gets back to normal, you can square up with them then.”
After a few seconds of an inner struggle, Rosemarie slipped the bottle into her pocket.
“We can grab some random stuff on the way out, but we should leave quickly,” said Neil, seeing that she had come to some kind of decision.
As they walked out of the store, Rosemarie and Neil grabbed random stuff off the shelves. It was too gloomy to see, but Rosemarie would check out what they retrieved later.
A clanging noise like something metal falling came from the back of the store. Randy swung around pointing his gun in the direction of the disturbance. “Hurry,” he said through gritted teeth.
Rosemarie could hear multiple moans and groans. The z-dudes were in the building with her and she wanted out as fast as possible. She started running towards the door to the car. Her shoes crunched over the fallen glass. She was almost to the car when she heard two loud shots behind her.
