Chapter 2.5

Rosemarie would've rather been cooking in her own home, on a proper stove in the air conditioning. And she could definitely do without the spiders and the dust. But all in all, dinner was pretty good.
Randy paced outside eating his dinner, muttering between bites. Rosemarie knew from Georgi that this was one of his habits. It scared the neighbors, and now that she was witnessing it, she understood why.
When he finished cleaning his plate and scaring the wildlife, he came back inside. “We need to barricade ourselves in better,” he said.

“Why?” asked Georgi.
“Because of the zombies,” he barked.
Oh my god! The fucking zombies again, thought Rosemarie. “Earth to Randal, I think we need to worry more about the bears and cougars than the z-dudes,” she said.
“That's horse crap. Cougars went extinct in this area,” said Randy.
“Bears and wolves then,” she said with a side glance.
He threw up his hands. "We're not in the Alaskan wild! There are zombies out there and we need to be ready."
“Best not to argue about barricadin',” Georgi said in a lowered voice, “It’ll keep him busy for awhile.”
Good ol' Georgi was always trying to be diplomatic.
“Fine, Randy,” Rosemarie said, “go do whatever.”
He left in a huff, banging around outside making a makeshift bar lock for the door.
“Why do you let him have his way?” Rosemarie asked.
“It’s easier than fighting him,” Georgi replied.
“Momma,” Alex said, popping up around the corner.
“Yes, honey,”
“I'm thirsty,” she said.
“Okay, baby. Let me get you some water.”
“You know, we're gonna need to get more drinkable water soon,” Rosemarie said as she wiped off the plasticware, “or find a way to bring the water to the cabin.”
“I have four life straws in my survival kit. One for each of us,” said Georgi. “But that won’t help with the dishes.”
“We can boil creek water,” Rosemarie said. “Once we get the pots from my car.”
“I need to stop off at Uncle Levi’s too.” Georgi said. “I want to check on him.”
“Oh! I bet we could watch the news at his house.” Rosemarie said.
“That might be difficult. He doesn’t have electricity.”
“Are you freaking kidding me? Who the heck doesn’t have power these days?”
“The old people around here are stuck in the old ways,” said Georgi.
“What, the caveman ways?” Rosemarie said.
“Pretty much. They’re use to it.”
“You’re gonna have to get used to it too,” Randy yelled from outside. “The power isn’t going to last long with the zombies running around!”
“Crazy motherf--” Rosemarie’s eyes dart to Alex. “--flippin’ kookie guy.” She leaned in to Georgi. "How does he always hear us?"
"He's good at eavesdropping." Georgi shrugged.
"Noisy, wackjob..." Rosemarie grumbled as she grabbed Murphy’s leash. “We're going for a walk.”
