After Georgi had some time to calm down and think, she still didn’t believe that zombies were real. At least not the way Randy made them out to be.
She could believe it was caused by a new drug that was hitting the streets. She could even believe that it was some sort of virus that attacks the brain making people aggressive and lose body functions. But she couldn’t believe in the dead reanimating and trying to eat brains.
She had to get it together. Whatever was going on, plague or dead coming back to life, she had to keep her head on straight.
Their lives had changed. They needed to figure out what they were going to do. She took a deep breath.
She looked at Rosemarie. “We plan to stay here? Right?”
“That is the plan.”
“We need to clean up this cabin and fill in all the holes,” Georgi said, “There's clay close to the creek. We can mix wood ash and clay to fill the holes, I think.”
“A list might be helpful,” suggested Rosemarie.
Georgi pulled out her notebook and began writing as she walked around the cabin. She furiously wrote. The list was getting longer and longer.
Rosemarie saw the panic that was starting to build. “Remember, you won’t be the only one working,” She said.
Georgi smiled. “Thank you,” she said with relief.
At home, Randy thought that because he had the paying job he didn’t have to do anything to help her. She had to go to school, take care of the family and clean the house alone.
Alex tried to help, but Georgi thought Randy could have at least taken out the trash. The few times he did take it out, he didn’t put a bag in the can. She remembered that had aggravated her to no end, but it seemed pretty silly now.
They were losing light and they needed to at least make the cabin better. With everyone's help, Georgi hoped they could get a lot done before it was too dark to clean off in the creek.
She needed a bath. She was hot and sticky and she smelled. They all did. The creek would do, but it wasn't safe.
The back room would make a great bathroom area if we did a little work to it. We could close off half of it for that purpose and use the other half for storage or something, she thought. Her mind was racing with plans and she had to write them down.
I hoped we can find the supplies to make this, she thought as she flipped the page and made some sketches.
“We would need a couple buckets, wood, nails, a barrel, shower head, drain... This could work. We could make this livable. We would need to have a way to make holes in the cabin for the pipes. And showers would be a lot of work in the winter, but it was possible,” she said.
Georgi was not sure if anyone was listening to her, but she didn’t care. She was on a roll. Her pencil was flying all over the paper and for a moment she forgot the bulk of their problems.
"Wow! Yeah, that could work." Rosemarie said over Georgi’s shoulder.
“How are we gonna wash our hands?” asked Alex.
“Maybe an old fashioned pitcher and bowl would work,” said Rosemarie.
“It could,” Georgi said. “Tomorrow, we’ll go out back and have a look at the treehouse. Maybe we can do somethin’ with it.”
“It would be nice to have more room and get up in the trees so those...people can’t run up on us,” said Rosemarie.
"They're not people," Randy yelled from outside. "They're zombies!"
