Three
days passed without zombies finding them. Alex and Rosemarie spent
time working on creating a hanging garden and dreaming up plans for a
garden on the ground. Of course, they were still worried about
setting foot on the ground. Georgi didn’t blame them and wished
that she didn’t have to set foot on it either.
At
midday when it was too hot to work, Alex and Rosemarie would play
board games. Sometimes the others would join in. Alex loved the
games. Georgi didn’t have much interest in playing. She was glad
that Rosemarie liked playing them. She needed the distraction from
the world.
They
weren’t exactly quiet. Neil and Georgi built the bridge from the
treehouse to the cabin. It took longer than she thought it would. Without
power tools, things would take longer. Especially since Randy
wouldn’t help. Georgi had asked him to help once.
“If
you give a mouse a cookie,” he replied then walked off into the
woods.
He
thought the whole thing was useless. Concerned with looking for more
ways to kill zombies, he was always going off into the woods doing
god knows what. Georgi was concerned that he would get himself killed
or hurt and she wouldn’t know what happened.
“I
wish Randy wouldn’t just wander off,” she said one afternoon at
lunch. She wondered if he really was
hunting deer.
“Why
don’t we build a lookout some place along the road?” said Neil.
“Yeah,
he could have his own little place far away from me,” said
Rosemarie.
“We
do have more wood from the barn,” Georgi said hesitantly. “I
guess it wouldn’t have to be that big, just a tree stand.”
There
was so much to do. So very much. She looked down at her blistered
hands. Her arms still hurt from building the bridge and the makeshift
bathroom in the cabin. She had plans to improve it. And their
situation.
“We
need to get more food. Huntin’ doesn’t seem to be workin’,”
she sighed.
“Food
first, then tree stand,” said Rosemarie.
Georgi
was relieved. She didn’t really want to start building right away.
She needed a break from it. Not wanting to complain, but she was
starting to feel run down.
“Sounds
good to me, but where are we goin’ to get the food,” she said. “I
doubt the grocery stores are open.”
“I
hate to suggest this,” said Rosemarie. “We could get it from
abandoned houses. We’d leave a note.”
“Maybe
we could get some koolaid,” said Alex hopefully.
Georgi
smiled. “Sure sweetie. We can at least look.”
They
decided they were going scavenging again. Georgi did want a few other
things besides food. A few luxury items. A few things to improve
their indoor bathroom. A few things to improve their beds. Who knows
what they would find? She was hopeful.
