Chapter 12: Uh Oh

The next morning, Rosemarie woke up to Georgi blowing her nose.
“Morning,” Rosemarie said. “Are you ok?”
“Sorry,” Georgi said from her blankets. “I didn’t mean to wake you. My allergies are actin’ up.” She wiped her nose.
“Do we have any allergy medicine?” Rosemarie asked.

“I believe so,” Georgi said. “I haven’t looked for it yet. I’ll look for it in a bit. Just want to lay here.”
“Ok. I’m going to go get breakfast for us,” Rosemarie said climbing out of her pile of blankets. She stretched popping her back. We were going to need better beds, she thought. She looked over at Georgi who looked miserable. Poor thing.
Rosemarie walked over the newly finished bridge to the cabin. Opening the small door, she peered into the gloom of the second floor loft. She held her breath while listening to the quiet of the house. All was quiet. She didn’t hear Randy snoring or rummaging about. With relief, she climbed inside.
“You will have to go soon, Randy,” said a woman’s voice.
Rosemarie froze. Who was that?
She waited few seconds, but didn’t hear the voice again. Creeping back out the window, she tried to be as quiet as possible. The boards creaked under her footsteps. She cringed. Once outside, she hurried across the bridge.
“Georgi,” Rosemarie said.
Georgi hadn’t moved from her blankets. She looked up at her friend. “Yeah?” she asked.
“There’s a woman in the cabin with Randy.”
“What?”
“I heard her voice.”
Georgi scrambled out of her blankets and climbed unsteadily to her feet. She reached for her gun as she slipped on her shoes.
“What’d she say?” asked Georgi.
“Something about Randy having to leave soon,” replied Rosemarie.
“Maybe he’s cheatin’ on me. Let’s go see who it is,” she said hoarsely.
“I doubt that. Where would he find someone already?” said Rosemarie.
Georgi grinned.
The two women crept along the bridge. Georgi peered into the the cabin. Stifling a sneeze, she saw nothing so continued into the gloom. They tried to walk softly across the floor and down the stairs to the main area of the cabin, but the floors creaked despite their efforts. No one was to be seen.
Rosemarie peered into the bathroom and storage area at the back of the cabin. She saw no one and shook her head at Georgi. They snuck over to Randy’s tent and looked inside.
There was only a sleeping Randy. No woman. Georgi let out a sigh of relief.
“I don’t understand,” said Rosemarie staring at the still bolted cabin door.
“Maybe Randy has learned to mimic voices…” said Georgi. She sneezed.
They searched the cabin and tent one more time. Still there was no one else in the cabin.
“I could’ve just been hearing things. Maybe from lack of food?” she asked hopefully.
“Could be,” said Georgi. “I’ve heard of people hearing stuff when they are under a lot of stress. And we have definitely been under a lot of stress lately.”
“Momma?” called a small voice from the attic.
“Yes, Alex?” said Georgi, walking over to the stairs.
Alex hurried down the stairs to wrap her arms around her mother. “I thought you left me,” the little girl said sadly.
“I’ll never leave you,” said Georgi hugging her daughter tightly.
“You can let go,” said Alex, squirming in her mother’s embrace.
Her mother squeezed her one last time and released her. “Let’s get breakfast,” said Georgi.
