Chapter 13: Outing

“She needs medicine,” said the small voice of Alex. Tears were starting to well up in her eyes. “Please,” she pleaded with the adults.
“Of course, we’ll get some,” said a worried Randy.
Alex looked up at Rosemarie.

Something in the girl’s eyes made Rosemarie take a step back. “Yes, medicine,” she said hurrying to dump out a backpack. She took a deep breath and scrambled down the treehouse stairs. She grabbed a few other bags and boxes and dumped them into the backseat of Georgi’s car.
“Come on!” she yelled to the men. “No time to lose.”
Murphy trotted up to the back door of the car. His tail was wagging, ready to go on a trip.
“No, Murphy,” said Rosemarie, pointing to the treehouse, “you stay here and guard Alex.”
His head dropped. He walked slowly back to the treehouse, looking back every few seconds to see if she would change her mind. She didn’t. He laid at the bottom of the treehouse stairs. His head on his paws he looked sadly as Rosemarie, Randy and Neil drove away.
As soon as they were out of sight, he stood up and climbed the stairs. Sighing as he trotted over to Alex. His eyes asked a question.
She smiled at him. “Soon.”
